USCIS Receipt Number FAQs

What is a USCIS receipt number?

A USCIS receipt number is a unique 13-character identifier assigned to every application or petition received by USCIS. It is used to track cases and check processing times.

How do I find my receipt number?

Your receipt number is printed on your Form I-797C, Notice of Action. It usually starts with three letters like EAC, WAC, LIN, or SRC.

What does the IOE receipt number mean?

IOE stands for USCIS Electronic Immigration System. It means your case is being processed electronically, either because you filed online or USCIS scanned your paper application into their digital system.

Can I use my receipt number to check my case status?

Yes. You can enter your 13-character receipt number in the USCIS Case Status Online tool to see the current status of your application.

What is the difference between EAC and VSC?

They are the same. EAC originally stood for Eastern Adjudication Center, which was later renamed the Vermont Service Center (VSC). USCIS still uses the EAC code for Vermont.

What is the difference between WAC and CSC?

They are the same. WAC originally stood for Western Adjudication Center, which was later renamed the California Service Center (CSC). USCIS still uses the WAC code.

What do the digits in my receipt number mean?

The first two digits represent the fiscal year your case was received. The next three digits represent the computer workday (Day 001 is Oct 1). The final five digits are a unique case sequence number.

Why doesn't my receipt number follow the standard format?

Some older receipt numbers, or receipt numbers for specific programs like DACA (often starting with IOE or PSC), may follow slightly different numbering conventions for the sequence portion.

Does the service center affect my processing time?

Yes. Processing times vary significantly between service centers. You must check the processing time for the specific service center that is handling your case.

What if my receipt number starts with MSC?

MSC stands for Missouri Service Center, which was the original name of the National Benefits Center (NBC). Your case is being processed by the NBC, which handles many family-based and adjustment of status applications.
