Returning to India for H1B visa stamping is one of the most stressful parts of the H1B journey — delays, 221(g) issuances, and unpredictable wait times make planning essential. This guide covers everything you need for a smooth stamping experience in 2026.

Which Consulate Should You Choose?

India has five US consulates that process H1B visa applications:

ConsulateCityCurrent B1/B2 WaitH1B Dropbox?Notes
HyderabadHyderabad45 daysYesFastest overall in 2026
ChennaiChennai58 daysYesStrong for IT professionals
MumbaiMumbai62 daysYesHigher volume, slower
New DelhiDelhi72 daysYesSlowest — avoid if possible
KolkataKolkata34 daysLimitedSmall volume, very fast if eligible

Current recommendation (June 2026): Hyderabad has the shortest overall wait and a strong recent track record for H1B approvals without 221(g). Chennai is a solid backup.

Dropbox Eligibility for H1B

You may qualify for the dropbox (interview-waiver) process if:

  • Your previous US visa was issued after age 14
  • Your previous visa is of the same category (H1B to H1B renewal) or you are renewing certain other categories
  • Your previous visa expired within the last 48 months (extended from 12 months in 2023 reforms)
  • You are applying at the consulate jurisdiction where you are currently located in India

MRV fee requirement: You must pay the $185 MRV fee before scheduling. Payment via Axis Bank (India) or through the USVISA-INFO portal.

Handling a 221(g) Administrative Processing

A 221(g) refusal is not a denial — it’s a request for additional review. Types:

Blue 221(g): Missing documents. Provide the requested documents and you’re usually cleared within 2–4 weeks.

White 221(g): Security/background check. No action needed — just wait. Can take 2 weeks to 6+ months. Most resolve within 60 days.

Yellow 221(g): Employer verification check. Consulate contacts employer directly. Ensure your employer responds promptly.

Track your 221(g) case on our 221(g) tracker to see how long others waited from your same consulate.
