USCIS Phone & N-400 FAQs

How can I speak to a live person at USCIS?

Call 1-800-375-5283. Say 'InfoPass' when asked what you are calling about. This often bypasses the automated system and puts you in the queue for a live agent.

What is a Tier 1 vs Tier 2 USCIS officer?

Tier 1 officers are customer service representatives who can only see what you see online. Tier 2 officers are actual immigration service officers who can see internal system notes and issue service requests.

How do I get transferred to a Tier 2 officer?

If your case is outside normal processing times or you have an emergency, ask the Tier 1 agent to escalate your call to a Tier 2 officer. You will usually receive a call back within 72 hours.

What are the best days to call USCIS?

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday between 8:00 AM and 10:00 AM EST generally have the shortest hold times. Avoid Mondays and Fridays if possible.

What is the 90-day early filing rule for naturalization?

Applicants for US citizenship (Form N-400) can submit their application up to 90 days before reaching their 3-year or 5-year anniversary as a permanent resident.

Does the 90-day rule apply to the physical presence requirement?

No. The 90-day early filing rule only applies to the continuous residence requirement. You must fully meet the physical presence requirement (30 or 18 months) on the exact day you file.

Can I file my N-400 exactly 90 days early?

It is highly recommended to wait until at least 89 days before your anniversary date. Filing even one day too early (e.g. 91 days) will result in a denial and loss of the filing fee.

What happens if I call USCIS without a receipt number?

You can still speak to an agent for general questions or InfoPass appointments. Just press 2 at the receipt number prompt, or say 'I don't have it' to the automated voice.

Will calling USCIS speed up my case?

Generally, no. Unless your case is officially 'outside normal processing times' or you qualify for an expedite request (like a medical emergency), calling will not move your case faster.

How do I make an InfoPass appointment?

InfoPass appointments cannot be scheduled online anymore. You must call the USCIS Contact Center and request an appointment for an emergency advance parole or ADIT stamp.
